NAVAL STATION MAYPORT, Fla. (Sep. 8, 2021) – The Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Sioux City (LCS 11), along with the “Sea Knights” of the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 22 Detachment 4 and Embarked Us The Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment departed its home port of Naval Base Mayport on September 7, 2021, beginning its deployment to support operations in the area of operations of the US Fourth Fleet.
Sioux City will support anti-narcotics operations in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. Sioux City operations will involve hands-on exercises and exchanges with partner nations, supporting the interoperability of the U.S. 4th Fleet and strengthening the U.S. position as a regional partner of choice.
The deployment of an LCS in the region aims to demonstrate the United States’ commitment to international cooperation and regional security. The size, speed and agility of the vessel make the LCS ideal for drug bans, partner engagements and port access.
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of September 11, the Sioux City crew remain focused on the mission,” said Cmdr. Bradford Tonder, commander of Sioux City. “We have a large group of first-time sailors on the crew, who provide new enthusiasm and insight to veteran crew members. The crew is delighted to carry out the mission of the US 4th Fleet.
Comprised of over 100 Sailors, Sioux City’s crew will consist of Surface Warfare mission personnel, a US Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) and an Aviation Detachment. , which will operate the on-board MH-60S helicopter.
“This is my first deployment, which is why I am so excited; I waited about three and a half years before I finally deployed, ”said Kyle Wawrzenski, Petty Officer Gunner’s Mate, a new crew member from Sioux City. “The fact that we have such a good crew makes it even more exciting and enjoyable for me. That’s what’s really going to make this a great deployment.
The LCS is a fast, agile, networked surface fighter, designed to operate in near-shore environments, while being able to perform tasks on the high seas and defeat 21st century threats.
The USS Sioux City is operationally assigned to the U.S. 2nd Fleet and is one of four littoral combat ships in Surface Division Two One.
